Shin wins longest LPGA event playoff

Korean Jiyai Shin made a two-putt par on the ninth hole of a playoff to beat Paula Creamer and win the Kingsmill Championship in Virginia, ending the longest playoff between two players in LPGA Tour history.

The women played the 18th hole eight times trying to break the tie on Sunday before darkness forced the suspension of play .

They drew a crowd of several hundred fans Monday morning, and needed just one more hole, the par-4 6th, to settle it.

Creamer hit her double-break first putt about 5 feet past the hole. She then missed the bending follow-up attempt, the ball hitting the right edge and spinning out. Shin’s first putt stopped 3 feet from the cup.

Former world No.1 Shin had shot a closing two-under par 69 to tie Creamer at 16-under 268 after the regulation four rounds at the Kingsmill Resort’s River Course.

Creamer had been seeking a 10th career title on the LPGA Tour and her first since the 2010 US Women’s Open, while Shin racked up her ninth win, the previous being in November 2010.
