Senden to snub leaderboards

John Senden has vowed not to look at the leaderboards over the weekend as he flirts with FedEx Cup elimination in the US PGA penultimate playoff event in Indiana.

Senden sits precariously in a tie for 33rd at five-under-par after two rounds at Crooked Stick Golf Club, needing to roughly remain inside the top 38 to stamp his papers to the end of season Tour Championship.

The Queenslander has decided it’s best not to know where he stands and just go about focussing on his golf.

“I just have to really concentrate on doing my work and on the weekend I’m really going to focus at not even looking at scoreboards and leaderboards, so I can just not know and just focus on playing my best and letting the chips fall that way,” Senden said.

“You just have to have a good attitude. I know the number is there, I know it is around the top 40 or so, but if I start thinking about it, that’s what I’ll shoot.

“So many times all year if I’m stretching to make the cut, I’ll make it on the number.

“If you are thinking about having to beat a number you’ll generally hang around it and that’s not ideal in this situation.”

The 41-year-old is wrestling with patience as the field tears apart a soft layout in a birdie fest with 61 of the 70-man field under par.

“It feels like you can birdie every hole but you know that’s not going to happen so you have to be patient,” Senden said.

“There are at least two or three birdies on each nine so you just need to pick your moments.

“I just need to focus on hitting good golf shots. I feel like I’m playing well enough, I just have to be patient.”

Geoff Ogilvy sits tied with Senden but needs a much bigger weekend to survive to Atlanta given he requires a top four finish.

The Victorian will have to shoot super low on Saturday and also Sunday to stave off elimination.

“I’ve been having a crack to go super low for two days but I’m just not scoring well enough yet for a tournament like this,” Ogilvy said.

“But you never know, it’s out there.

“I’ll be trying to have the lowest score I can.”
