Australian golfer Brett Rumford has claimed his second European Tour title in just seven days, winning the China Open on Sunday.
The 35-year-old from Perth shot a brilliant closing four-under-par 68 to finish at 16-under and win by four strokes from Finland’s Mikko Ilonen (71) at Binhai Lake GC in Tianjin.
The comfortable win was in stark contrast to his victory in last week’s Ballantine’s Championship in South Korea when he eagled the first play-off hole.
It was Rumford’s fifth career win in his 15th season on the European tour.
Before last week he had played 121 tournaments over five years and 231 days since his previous win at the European Masters.
“As last week I’m kind of speechless,” said Rumford. “I don’t know what to say – a couple in a row, it’s quite surreal.
“It’s the first time I have played the week after a win.”
Rumford earned 407,500 euros ($A523,275) for his win, taking his earnings in the past seven days to 775,000 euros ($A995,185) – more than he won in the previous two seasons.
The twin successes lifted Rumford to the No.1 ranking in the tour’s season-long Race to Dubai standings and he’s set to achieve a career-best world ranking on Monday.
His scores of 68 67 69 68 marked just the third time in his European tour career he’s played all four rounds under 70, and he’s won two of those times.
He’s the first Australian since Jack Newton in 1972 to win back-to-back on the European tour.
