PGA president sacked over Poulter tweet

Ted Bishop has been sacked as president of the PGA of America, less than a day after he called English golfer Ian Poulter a “lil girl” on Twitter.

The PGA of America said on Friday Bishop was relieved of his duties after the slur aimed at the European Ryder Cup player, which he then repeated on Facebook, before removing them.

Bishop was upset over comments Poulter made in his book about the Ryder Cup captaincy of Nick Faldo in 2008 and Tom Watson last month.

He said Faldo’s record stands by itself and compared it with Poulter’s achievements, referring to him as a “lil girl.”

On Facebook, Bishop referred to Poulter “bashing” Watson and Faldo.

He wrote that Poulter “sounds like a little school girl squealing during recess.”

PGA vice president Derek Sprague will replace Bishop on an interim basis.

“The members and apprentices of the PGA of America must uphold the highest standards and values of the profession, as well as the manner in which we conduct ourselves at all times,” Sprague said.

“We apologise to any individual or group that felt diminished, in any way, by this unacceptable incident.”

Bishop had one month remaining on a two-year term.
