Ormsby ready to spoil mate Scott’s party

Wade Ormsby thought he may have used up Adam Scott’s hospitality when he hit the front of the Australian PGA championship leaderboard.

The South Australian is good mates with the world No.3 and is spending his time on the Gold Coast staying with Scott at the defending champion’s home.

What probably wasn’t in Scott’s plan was his house guest turning into one of the main rivals for the Joe Kirkwood Cup.

After stealing Scott’s thunder by topping the leaderboard along with West Australia’s Scott Strange after Friday’s second round, Ormsby wasn’t sure if he’d be needing to find new accommodation after his third round on Saturday.

“I was waiting for my bags at the front door there yesterday, but no, all good,” Ormsby said.

The pair will once again do battle in what looms as a tense finish to the tournament at Royal Pines on Sunday.

Ormsby’s long-range birdie putt on the 18th on Saturday ensured he goes into the final round at 10-under-par and with a share of the lead with Scott and Strange.

Another West Australian, Jason Scrivener, is one shot further shot back along with American Boo Weekley, while New Zealander Michael Hendry’s five-under 67 third round has him in contention at eight-under.

For his part, Scott couldn’t be happier to see Ormsby carrying the form which helped him be the leading Australian on this year’s European Tour into an Australian major.

“It’s good for him,” Scott said.

“I can see the confidence in him. He’s playing well again this week. He’s played well the last few weeks and you can see what kind of effect that has on him.

“I’m very happy for him.”
