Geoff Ogilvy was in no mood to discuss a second-round performance he thought would send him packing from the British Open.
“I had too many shots,” was the Australian’s blunt and assessment after a second-successive four-over 74 at Muirfield made it look almost certain he would miss the cut.
Pressed on what aspects of his game might have let him down, Ogilvy added coldly: “The amount of shots I had.”
And what of the difficult conditions and lightning-quick greens that so many others were struggling to cope with?
“I didn’t play very well, so I can’t tell,” Ogilvy said.
As it turned out, a combined two-round total of eight-over 148 was just enough to sneak inside the cut, such was the trouble the afternoon starters had on the treacherous course.
Asked after his round what he would take out of the week, Ogilvy said “disappointment” and “frustration” but he’ll now get a chance to make amends.
The 2006 US Open champion was understandably more upbeat after learning he had somehow survived the cut.
“Looking like a reprieve. Wow! Never underestimate how hard these courses get late in the day,” Ogilvy tweeted Friday evening.
The 36-year-old has missed eight cuts from 14 events so far this year, though he finished runner up at the Honda Classic in March.
Ogilvy, who shared ninth spot at last year’s British Open, also showed good form in finishing tied 32nd at last month’s US Open.
Peter Senior, competing at his 19th Open, survived the cut with the same score but seven of Australia’s 12-strong contingent missed out.
