Nordqvist wins LPGA Kia Classic

Sweden’s Anna Nordqvist will carry winning form into 2014’s first women’s golf major after claiming the LPGA Tour’s Kia Classic title.

World No.10 Nordqvist fired a closing five-under-par 67 to win by one-shot over American Lizette Salas (70) with a 13-under total at Aviara Golf Club in Carlsbad, California on Sunday.

It was her second win of the year following at two-shot wire-to-wire victory at the LPGA Thailand in February.

Nordqvist, whose poor form in 2013 had her contemplating giving up the game, now goes into this week’s major, the Kraft Nabisco Championship at Rancho Mirage, California, brimming with confidence.

“I’m still almost shaking right now that I’m standing here with another win,” Nordqvist said. “It makes me believe a lot more in myself.”

Australia’s Karrie Webb went into the final round with a chance of claiming her second LPGA title in seven days as she was four off the pace but she finished poorly with a 75 to be tied 25th.

Unlike in Thailand, Nordqvist had to battle back from a disappointing first-round 73. After a second-round 68 she carded back-to-back 67s on the weekend.

Her only bogey of the final day, at 17, came after six birdies.

Salas started the day tied for the lead with American Cristie Kerr. She arrived at the 18th tee tied for second with American Lexi Thompson, but made her third birdie of the day claim outright second.

Thompson’s 68 for 277 put her in third and South Korea’s Chella Choi carded a 69 for 278.
