American Phil Mickelson has claimed his fifth major golf title, coming from well back in the field to win the British Open at Muirfield.
Mickelson fired a superb final round of five-under 66 to finish at three-under-par 281 for the tournament, three strokes clear of Swede Henrik Stenson (70).
Australian Adam Scott (72) took the lead with six holes to play but faltered badly down the stretch with four straight bogeys to be tied third alongside overnight leader Lee Westwood (75) and another Englishman, Ian Poulter (67).
World No.1 Tiger Woods (74), who entered the day two shots off the pace, was tied sixth at two over.
Mickelson, who started the day six shots off the lead, continued a remarkable trend of every British Open winner at Muirfield since World War II featuring in world golf’s hall of fame.
He joins an illustrious list of champions that includes Jack Nicklaus, Lee Trevino, Tom Watson, Nick Faldo and Ernie Els.
It was his second Open triumph after winning at Royal St George’s in 2011.
