Manassero wins Singapore Open play-off

Italian teenager Matteo Manassero won the co-sanctioned Singapore Open on the third hole of a play-off against South Africa’s Louis Oosthuizen on Sunday.

In dramatic scenes at the par-71 Sentosa Golf Club, both players birdied the first play-off hole on the par-five 18th and parred the second, but Manassero then bravely downed a 12-foot eagle putt for his third career win.

The 19-year-old birdied the last of his regulation holes to force the showdown to extend a marathon final day.

Manassero hit two huge shots to reach the green and then two-putted from 60 feet to finish tied with the South African on 13-under-par 271.

Storms on Thursday and Friday meant the third round had to be completed on Sunday morning and Oosthuizen’s scores on the day were 65 and 67 as Manassero carded 64 and 69.

World No.1 Rory McIlroy (69, 65) finished in third place at 10 under, guaranteeing he will win the European Tour money title.

He becomes the second golfer after Luke Donald last year to win both the US PGA Tour and European money titles in the same season.

In fourth place at nine under was Sweden’s early leader Thomas Bjorn (74, 68) while a further shot back was Australian Adam Scott (69, 70) in a tie for fifth place, five shots off the pace.
