Leishman still enjoying Scott’s Masters

Marc Leishman admits he too lost his cool as Adam Scott famously roared “come on Aussie” on the 18th hole of Augusta National with a historic Masters win looming.

Leishman could be seen fist-pumping in the background as Scott sunk a birdie putt on the 72nd hole of tournament.

The Australian pair meet again this week at the Australian PGA Championship on the Gold Coast, in what will be Scott’s first tournament on home soil since his hoodoo-busting win at Augusta National.

Leishman enjoyed a breakthrough year of his own in 2013 by finishing tied for fourth at the Masters and earning selection for the Presidents Cup.

The 30-year-old said being there to share Scott’s Masters success had been the moment when emotions boiled over.

“I’ve had a lot of comments about the fist pump in the background and all that, and it was probably not really like me to do that. I rarely fist pump my own putts,” he said.

“I just knew what it meant for Australia and for Scottie. It was just exciting.

“We thought it was probably good enough to win, when he made that putt, but it was great that he could keep himself composed in the play-off and knock it off and get one for himself and Australia.

“He just came over and he screamed “come on Aussie” in my face, when we sort of did that little high five.

“It’s great to look back on that, good memories that I’ll have for the rest of my life.”

While most eyes will be on Scott going into the PGA Championship, Leishman believes he has the confidence to claim a first big win on home soil either this week or next at the Australian Masters.

“I’ve won a few places around the world and haven’t managed to win one of the big events here yet,” Leishman said.

“Obviously this week is as good an opportunity as I’ve ever had, this week and next week. With the wind the way it is, I feel like I play reasonably well in the wind.

“The course is playing pretty tough, so I think the tougher it plays, the better.”
