Lee shines at Australian amateur golf

Australian amateur champion Minjee Lee on Wednesday eased her way to a four-stroke lead after the opening round of the Australian Girls Amateur tournament at Mount Lawley Golf Club in Perth.

In warm conditions, the West Australian shot a four-under-par 69 to lead local Hannah Green and Sydney junior Celina Yuan who finished with even-par 73s.

Defending champion Su Hyun Oh of Victoria finished with a one-over 74 and shares fourth place with Jessica Lasky of NSW.

In the Australian Boys’ Amateur Championship at the Pinjarra club near Mandurah, Lucas Herbert of Victoria and South Australian Anthony Murdaca both fired course record six-under-par 66s in a birdie blitz during the first round.

Herbert finished in a tie for second at the PGA Tour of Australasia’s Heritage Classic over the summer, while Murdaca remains the youngest player to win the Australian Junior Championship as a 14 year-old in 2010.

Grant Booth of NSW is in outright third after an opening 67 while Viraat Badhwar of Queensland is fourth following a 68.
