Korean golfer Chella Choi has blasted the lowest score of her career to post a new women’s course record at the Australian Open tournament at Victoria Golf Club.
Just a day after Sweden’s Anna Norqvist eclipsed the mark on the par 72 course with a 64, Choi signed for a 10-under 62.
Playing in ideal conditions on the Melbourne sandbelt course, the world No.28 had two eagles and seven birdies in her haul with one of the eagles coming on her final hole.
Her previous best professional round score was 63 in the 2012 Manulife LPGA tournament on the Grey Silo Golf Course in Ontario, Canada, when she finished tied for second.
“It’s the first time I’ve ever had two eagles in a round,” said the 23-year-old.
“I don’t know why I have 10 under today, it was just amazing.”
It was a stunning effort after Choi carded 70 and 71 in her opening two rounds.
She said her short game had let her down but in the third round everything clicked.
Choi was inspired to play golf after watching Korean hero Se Ri Pak, who won the 1998 US Women’s Open and is considered a pioneer in her home country.
Choi said she left Seoul for the United States aged six because her driving range was only 100m long and there was no putting or chipping green.
Yet to win on the LPGA tour, Choi is hoping that her record round leads to the breakthrough victory.
