Ko upset in Australian amateur champs

Defending champion Lydia Ko fell to a surprise defeat in the second round of the Australian Amateur Golf Championships in Melbourne on Friday.

The world No.1 and US amateur champion was beaten by Victorian Jo Charlton 2 and 1 at Commonwealth Golf Club.

Charlton will play West Australian Hannah Green in the quarter-finals that also feature South Australian Jenny Lee against New Zealander Julianne Alvarez, West Australian Minjee Lee against Kotone Hori of Japan and Korean Ji-Hyun Oh against Victorian Julienne Soo.

In the men’s event, which had two rounds on Friday, only one of the four top qualifiers survived, New Zealander Sam An who beat two Victorians – Andrew Schonewille 1-up and Ryan Ruffles 2-up.

Five other Australians progressed including Commonwealth Club and national squad member Geoff Drakeford who defeated reigning Australian junior champion Tyler Hodge of New Zealand 4 and 2.

In the quarters he will play Dylan Perry of the NSW while the other match-ups are An against Dale Brandt-Richards of NSW, England’s Neil Raymond against Cameron Smith of Queensland plus New Zealander Blair Riordan against Queenslander Damien Jordan.
