Justin Rose wins US Open

Englishman Justin Rose has secured his maiden major with a two-shot US Open victory over Australian Jason Day and American Phil Mickelson at Merion Golf Club in Pennsylvania.

Rose carded an even-par final-round 70 to finish at one-over for the championship.

Bidding to give Australia back-to-back majors for the first time in history after Adam Scott won the Masters in April, Day finished two back after a closing 71.

It was Day’s third runner-up result at a major after he also finished second at the 2011 US Open and joint runner-up with Scott at the 2011 Masters.

Rose was the first Englishman to win the US Open since Tony Jacklin 43 years ago and the first to win a major since Nick Faldo did so 17 years ago at the Masters.

For 43-year-old Mickelson, it was another US Open heartbreak as he finished runner-up for a record sixth time after a 74.
