A supremely confident Adam Scott is not content with his stellar year thus far and now has Tiger Woods firmly in his sights.
Scott claimed Australia’s first green jacket at the Masters in April and the first of the US PGA Tour playoff events at the Barclays just last month – but he wants more.
The Queenslander lines up for the third playoff event this week at Conway Farms Golf Club in Chicago primed to continue his hot form.
At third in the season-long points list, the 33-year-old is already guaranteed safe passage to the Tour Championship in Atlanta and is almost certain to remain in the top five regardless of his result this week.
Those inside the top five starting in Atlanta have their destiny in their own hands and will claim the FedEx Cup and the $US10 million ($A10.80 million) bonus should they win the tournament.
But despite effectively being able to take this week off and still be in great shape, Scott couldn’t be hungrier.
“I feel like I should get greedy right now and just win,” Scott told AAP.
“I had a nice week off. I think I needed it, but the last three days the swing has really fallen into a nice spot.
“The confidence is there so I feel like I should capitalise on everything I have put into the year and try to win this week to get myself to No.1 position for next week.”
The world No.2 knows he can’t overthrow Woods from his perch just yet, but wants another win to muddy the waters on the US tour Player of the Year award.
World No.1 Woods has five wins this season, including two World Golf Championships, but should Scott add a second playoff win to his major, talk is he could get the nod.
Phil Mickelson, who won in Phoenix and also at the British Open, is the other player in the discussion, which centres on the weight of winning major championships.
“I think if I can get another win in the next two weeks here, then I give myself a great chance of being voted player of the year which I think is a huge honour,” Scott said.
“I think I need one more win because of the names in the conversation.
“It needs to be a very strong argument to knock them off the list. If I throw in one more win, I think I’d be in good shape as long as they don’t throw one in also.”
Scott is paired with Woods (second on points) and the current points leader Henrik Stenson for the opening two rounds.
