Golf legend Arnold Palmer had a pacemaker implanted on Monday to correct an abnormal heartbeat, according to his website. The surgery at a Pittsburgh hospital was called a success.

“He will remain in the hospital for observation overnight and is expected to be released Tuesday,” the website report stated.

The 84-year-old Palmer did not have a history of heart problems, though he does have high blood pressure.

He fell ill and had to leave the final round of the 2012 Arnold Palmer Invitational he hosts annually in Orlando. Tests showed his blood pressure had risen due to new medication he was taking at the time.

Palmer’s only other health issue was prostate cancer in 1997. He underwent surgery and radiation treatment and has not had a recurrence of the cancer.

Palmer retired from competitive golf in 2006. He still plays occasionally, though he said the years have affected his game.
