Gibson wants golf title to match record

He’s shot the lowest golf round in history and played at the British Open with Tiger Woods but Rhein Gibson wants to be known as an Australian Masters champion.

Originally from Lismore in northern NSW but based in Oklahoma, Gibson is in the hunt after an opening round of four under 68 at Metropolitan Golf Club in Melbourne.

The 28-year-old has been recognised by Guinness World Records for carding the lowest ever round – a stunning 16-under 55 at the River Oaks Golf Club in Oklahoma back in 2012.

While it’s a nice record to have, Gibson wants titles.

“I’d like to shoot a 55 to win this on Sunday,” he said.

“I don’t want my career to be known as 55 and to be known as a one-hit wonder.

“Maybe a win this week could change that.”

With defending champion Adam Scott doing it tough with a one over par 73, Gibson’s opening round was all the more impressive given he only arrived from the US on Tuesday.

He lives there with his American wife after completing college in Oklahoma City.

Gibson played on the weekend to advance to the final stage of qualifying for the Web.com tour.

He said he squeezed in a quick nine holes on Tuesday afternoon, which was also his introduction to a Melbourne sand-belt course.

“Tuesday had the opposite wind direction so it was quite difficult but luckily I had Matt Giles and Josh Younger in my group and I saw what clubs they were hitting,” Gibson said.

“I was still on a high after making it through to the final stages of Web.com.

“I knew I had been playing well.”

Gibson will play in next week’s Australian Open, where he finished fourth last year behind winner world No.1 Rory McIlroy.
