Day leads Aussie charge at Augusta

Jason Day fired a four-under 68 to take a one-shot lead after the second round of the Masters while all four Australians remain in the top 14.

Looking to break the Australian green jacket curse in the 77th playing of the Masters at Augusta National, Day led the way to be six-under par for the tournament, one clear of countryman Marc Leishman (73) and 1992 champion Fred Couples (71).

Leishman held the overnight lead with Sergio Garcia and was leading for most of the round until Day took over late.

Jim Furyk (71), Brandt Snedeker (70) and 2009 champion Angel Cabrera are in a tie for fourth at four-under.

Adam Scott shot an even par 72 to have him tied for eighth at three-under where he is joined by four-time Masters champion Tiger Woods (71) while John Senden is just one more shot back at two-under in a tie for 14th after a 70.

14-year-old Guan Tianlang of China made the cut, becoming the youngest ever on PGA Tour, despite being penalised one shot for slow play.

Day opened his round with three pars before dropping a shot on the par three fourth.

He gained it right back with birdie on the fifth and added another on the seventh to get his round heading in the right direction.

Back-to-back birdies to open the back nine pushed the 25-year-old into a share of the lead but it evaporated quickly when he dumped his tee ball on the 12th into Rae’s Creek.

The subsequent bogey could’ve rattled the Queenslander but he bounced back immediately with an eight foot birdie putt at 13 to rejoin the party up top.

When he slid in a 10-foot slider on the 16th he was out front alone.

Leishman had to contend with two early bogeys and bounced back with birdies on the seventh and eighth holes.

He then dropped a further shot on the 14th to relinquish the outright lead but parred home to ensure he remained well and truly in the hunt.

Scott carded three bogeys in his opening five holes before climbing back with birdies at seven, 14 and 18.

Senden birdied the second, eighth, 10th and 11th to be just one shot from the lead before slipping back with bogeys on 16 and 17 coming home.
