Cabrera holding off Aussie Masters charge

Argentina’s Angel Cabrera pushed to a two-shot lead midway through Sunday’s final round of the Masters, trying his best to break Australian hearts.

Cabrera is nine-under-par for the tournament through eight holes of the final round at Augusta National, two ahead of American Brandt Snedeker and three clear of Australian challengers Adam Scott and Jason Day.

Day lifted Australian hopes of a maiden green jacket early in the round after a blistering start from which he took the lead.

The 25-year-old drained a 30-foot putt for birdie on the first before sensationally holing out for eagle from the greenside bunker on the second.

But a bogey on the par-3 sixth after he missed the green short and another dropped shot on the ninth put him back to six-under.

He sits there with Adam Scott, who bogeyed his nemesis first hole but birdied the third with a lovely curling putt.

Marc Leishman bogeyed the fourth but birdied the ninth to remain at five-under in fifth alone.

Cabrera, the 2009 Masters champion, held the overnight lead with Snedeker but birdied the second and seventh holes to take control.
