Boo Weekley to play Aussie PGA

Three-time PGA Tour winner Boo Weekley will add an American flavour to the upcoming Australian PGA Championship on the Gold Coast.

The veteran showman will play in Australia for the first time at the tournament to be held at Royal Pines on December 11-14.

Weekley, 41, is a crowd favourite in the USA and is famed for riding his driver like a cowboy to celebrate his singles win at the 2008 Ryder Cup.

He most recently won the 2013 Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial and will be a prime challenger to world No.2 Adam Scott’s hopes of defending his title.

“I have heard great things about Australia and the Gold Coast, I am looking forward to playing there for the first time,” he said.

“Australian golf is renowned around the world so I cant wait to test my game on the RACV Royal Pines Resort layout.

As well as defending champion Scott, Weekley will take on local favourites Robert Allenby, Greg Chalmers, Craig Parry and Peter Lonard.

Australian PGA chief executive Brian Thornton said Weekley’s personality made him a perfect fit for the tournament.

“Australian golf fans appreciate watching talented professional golfers but also love to be entertained,” said PGA of Australia CEO Brian Thorburn.
