Aussie Fraser qualifies for British Open

In-form Australian Marcus Fraser was among 10 golfers to earn spots in next month’s British Open at the qualifying competition at Sunningdale on Monday.

Fraser – who was beaten in a four-hole playoff by Englishman Danny Willett at the BMW International in Cologne on Sunday – carded rounds of 66 and 68 to finish in a six-way tie for third.

Englishman James Morrison won the two-round European international qualifying event with an overall score of 131, two shots clear of countryman Sam Walker.

The final Open qualifying spots on offer on Monday went to Thorbjorn Olesen from Denmark and England’s Lee Slattery, who survived a playoff among five players for two spots.

But big names Colin Montgomerie, Jose Maria Olazabal and Matteo Manassero failed to qualify, as did Australians Richard Green (69-71), Andrew Dodt (68-74) and Bradley Smith (75-82).

The British Open will be played from July 19-22 at Royal Lytham and St Annes.
