Teenager Oliver Goss emerged from a battle of amateurs to win the WA Open Championship played at Royal Perth Golf Club.
Goss, 18, beat overnight leader Brady Watt at the fifth play-off hole after both finished tied at 16-under 272.
“I guess things were just flowing and I definitely putted better today than I have any other day, I think that’s what made the difference,” said Goss who had a final round of 6-under 66, two better than Watt.
“Brady is another solid player, it definitely wasn’t easy, but I guess I may have felt the pressure a bit more if I had been playing with (professionals) Scott Strange or Brett Rumford.”
With an eagle opportunity on the 18th to claim the Championship Goss came up short and with Watt making birdie the pair headed to a playoff.
They twice played the par 5, 463m 18th hole, both making birdies, before moving to the par 4 284m 8th hole.
“I thought I have got to win, I have nothing to lose, so I just pulled out driver the last few times and fortunately it worked out,” said Goss, the first amateur since Stephen Leaney in 1991 to win the WA Open Championship and the first amateur since Danny Lee in 2009 to win a PGA Tour of Australasia tournament.
“I like to think it’s quite a good achievement and I am really happy,” Goss added.
Watt was happy with his performance throughout the week.
“I was just happy because I won last week and put myself in position to get another W this week, I fell a little bit short but that’s golf,” said Watt, who won the Keperra Bowl.
Finding the form he was looking for all week on the back nine on Sunday, Rumford finished the leading pro at 14 under.
“A good finish, I don’t know where that was all week,” said second-round leader Rumford, who was impressed by the young amateurs.
“Certainly for these guys they have tremendous talent, I am really looking forward to seeing what these guys can do in the future.”
With a final round of 7-under 65, Rumford set a course record at his home club of Royal Perth but he wasn’t alone, Daniel Nisbet also managed the feat, on his way to recording a 12-under 276 tied 6th finish in his first outing as a professional.
Three holes have recently been changed so a course record of 66 was played by four others earlier in the event during the event, including Watt and Goss.
Defending champion Rohan Blizard (67) and last year’s runner up Ashley Hall (69) finished tied 4th at 13-under.
A further shot back tied 6th were Queenslander Nisbet, South Australian Nick Cullen (67) and local pro Strange (70) who had a hole-in-one on Sunday at the par-3 141m 12th.
