Australian Robert Allenby is five shots off the lead at the US PGA Tour’s Mayakoba Golf Classic in Mexico after Daniel Summerhays blitzed the third round with a four-under par 67.
Summerhays moved to a 54-hole total of 12-under 201 and grabbed a two-stroke lead over fellow American Chris Stroud on Saturday.
Allenby carded 70 for a tally of 206, to be tied for fifth with Marc Turnesa (67).
He will need an impressive final round to overtake Summerhays, Stroud, along with Michael Allen and Will Claxton, who both have a total of 205.
But the tournament is Summerhays’ to lose.
“Tomorrow, I’m just going to try and do the same things I’ve been doing all week,” said Summerhays, whose biggest career victory to date was as an amateur in a 2007 Nationwide developmental tour event.
“I’m going to try and hit the driver really well again. My swing feels really good, so I’m picking out good targets. I’m judging the wind correctly and I’m managing it well.
“I’m really looking forward to the opportunity tomorrow to take the lead into the final round of a PGA Tour event and see how I perform.”
Summerhays and Stroud are the only players with three rounds in the 60s on the Greg Norman-designed El Camaleon course.
“The wind is everything on this course,” Stroud said.
“The wind has a huge effect on every shot, into the greens, off the tees.
“You have a lot of elevated tee boxes into the wind and you better hit it really straight off the tee or you’re going to be in the mangrove out there and trying to find your ball.”
Defending champion Johnson Wagner, a winner already this year at the Sony Open last month, was one-over for the week after a 71.
The $US3.7 million ($A3.47 million) US PGA Tour event is played opposite the WGC Match Play Championship in Arizona, which drew the top golfers in the world this week.
