Allenby beaten in US PGA Tour play-off

Robert Allenby’s decade-long wait for a fifth US PGA Tour title continues after he was beaten by American John Huh in a marathon sudden-death play-off.

Toor rookie Huh birdied the eighth extra hole to break the deadlock and win the Mayakoba Classic title in Mexico.

Allenby, 40, was seeking his first win on the US tour since the Pennsylvania Classic back in 2001.

Allenby will seldom get a better chance to break his drought as the field at the El Camaleon resort course was weak, with all of the world’s top ranked players missing as they contested the WGC Match Play Championship in Tucson, Arizona.

And his defeat in the play-off will be doubly hard to take as he would have won the tournament except for a double bogey on the final hole in regulation as he shot six-under-par 65 and ended up tied with Huh (63) at 13-under.

Earlier, Allenby had been on fire at eight under for the day including a run of five straight birdies from the second hole.

Huh and Allenby finished two shots clear of American duo Matt Every and Colt Knost who both shot closing 66s.
