$1m up for grabs at new pro-am golf event

Sinking a $1 million clutch putt is a privilege usually reserved for golfers whose pockets are already bulging with cash.

But, according to businessman Frank Williams, that’s simply too boring.

The former manager of Greg Norman wants to see an amateur sweat it out on the last green and – partly for that reason – has launched a new golf tournament with a twist to be played in February.

The Rush, to be contested over 72 holes on the Mornington Peninsula at the Moonah Links Legends course and The Dunes, will boast an impressive $1.3 million purse and feature teams comprising one professional and one amateur.

In an Australian first, the winning pair will split the $1 million first prize – with $500,000 for the professional and the other half to a charity of the amateur’s choosing.

A separate charity purse will also be up for grabs.

“At the end of the day, I want to see an amateur on the last green, a butcher from Wollongong or wherever, with an eight-foot downhill putt, left to right, trying to win a million bucks,” Williams told AAP.

“Amateurs have never been able to experience the rush, the thrill, the things the pros go through when they stand over a six-foot putt and it means everything.

“Most amateurs would love to have that experience and I think that’s going to be one of the big draws to it.”

The best ball, stroke play event will be open to all amateur players with an official handicap and registered with a golf governing body – including men, women, juniors and seniors.

But with an entry fee of $10,000 per team, it won’t be for everybody.

Williams is banking on a few big name pros to be tempted by the half million dollars and link up with those in the amateur ranks.

Former tour professional and three-time winner in Europe Shani Waugh and pro Mike Clayton have already put their names down, alongside confirmed starters in TV veteran Kerri-Anne Kennerley and celebrity chef Ian Curley.

“If it’s successful the first year, which I have no reason to believe it won’t be, then it’ll be an annual thing and we’ll make it bigger and better,” Williams said.
