Formula One driver Sebastian Vettel believes he has failed during his time at Ferrari, the German told the F1 Beyond The Grid podcast on Wednesday.
“It’s true that I have failed,” Vettel said. “I set the target to win the world championship with Ferrari. I failed, I didn’t manage to do it.”
After winning four consecutive world championships with Red Bull from 2010 to 2013, Vettel moved to Ferrari in the 2015 season and wanted to herald a new title-era following his idol Michael Schumacher.
But the best he managed was two second places in 2017 and 2018.
“There are things I could have done better, things that maybe I should have seen earlier, fights that maybe I shouldn’t have taken,” the 33-year-old said.
However, he doesn’t look back at his time at Ferrari with regrets as he believes he grew up as a person and learned new things.
In 2021 Vettel will remain in Formula One, but with a seat at Racing Point, who will rebrand as Aston Martin from next year.
“It seems to be a fun project,” he said. “A lot of things there will happen for the first time, and I think this is an incredibly challenging journey for the whole team.”
Vettel is enduring a miserable final season with Ferrari and enters a home Eifel Grand Prix at the Nuerburgring on Sunday with only 17 points in the drivers’ championship.
