The Goodwood Tips, Field Preview and Selections – 2020

The locals have a great chance to celebrate a home town Group 1 victory with Gytrash in the 2020 The Goodwood at Morphettville on Saturday.

Gytrash has been installed as the favourite at Ladbrokes.com.au for the 1200m Group 1 sprint following some outstanding Autumn Carnival form which includes a win in the Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning (1000m) at Flemington and a last start win in the Group 3 R N Irwin Stakes (1100m) at Morphettville.

The fifteen horse field also includes multiple Group 1 winner Santa Ana Lane who is chasing a second victory in the premier sprint race of the Adelaide Autumn Racing Carnival after collecting the winning trophy two years ago.

Group 1 winners Trekking, Sunlight and Lyre also give the 2020 The Goodwood plenty of depth for the punters.

We have analysed the entire field and our complete 2020 The Goodwood tips can be found below!

Santa Ana Lane

Santa Ana Lane is lining up for the third time in The Goodwood and can claim a second victory in the Group 1 sprint after collecting the spoils two years ago.

The Anthony Freedman trained multiple Group 1 winner has been struggling to find the winner’s stall since claiming the 2019 Group 1 T J Smith Stakes (1200m) at Randwick but has been runner up on three occasions, including a second in this years T J Smith Stakes during the 2020 Sydney Autumn Carnival.

Santa Ana Lane is coming off a last start sixth in the Group 1 All Aged Stakes over 1400m at Randwick and is dropping back to his pet distance of 1200m and will be one of the main players here.

Trekking

Trekking is never far away from the major prize and has been placed three times from five starts since winning the Group 2 Schillaci Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield during the 2019 Melbourne Spring Carnival.

The 2019 Stradbroke Handicap winner is coming off a last start second in the Group 3 Hall Mark Stakes (1200m) at Randwick during the 2020 Sydney Autumn Carnival and can’t be discarded with South Australian Derby winning jockey Johnny Allen in the saddle.

Gytrash

It is hard to fault Gytrash’s recent form which includes a last start three lengths win in the Group 3 R N Irwin Stakes (1100m) at Morphettville on April 18 and the Gordon Richards trained sprinter deserves to be favourite.

Gytrash broke through for his initial Group 1 win in the Black Caviar Lightning over 1000m down the Flemington straight during the 2020 Melbourne Autumn Carnival.

The four year old was then placed twice in Group 1 company with a third in the Newmarket Handicap (1200m) at Flemington followed by a second in the William Reid Stakes (1200m) at The Valley.

Gytrash is racing in career best form and has a great chance to collect a home town Group 1 victory.

Sunlight

Multiple Group 1 winner Sunlight ran the worst race of her brilliant career last start when she failed to beat a runner home after jumping from a very wide barrier in the Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m) for the fillies and mares at Morphettville on May 2.

Sunlight had a stellar three year old season, collecting three Group 1 wins in the Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) and the Newmarket Handicap (1200m) down the Flemington straight as well as the William Reid Stakes (1200m) at The Valley (1200m).

Father and son co-trainers Tony and Calvin McEvoy have put the blinkers on Sunlight who is going to get a better run from an inside gate in The Goodwood and expect an improved performance.

Zoutori

Zoutori is having his first run back since failing to beat a runner home when eleventh in the Group 1 William Reid Stakes (1200m) at The Valley in March.

The Matthew Ellerton and Simon Zahra trained Zoutori is yet to win at Group 1 level but was runner up in the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) at Caulfield during the 2020 Melbourne Autumn Carnival and does have a very good first up record.

Jungle Edge

Noted mudluark Jungle Edge looks out of luck this weekend with only a minimal chance of rain forecast for Adelaide in the lead up to the weekend.

Jungle Edge was back in the winner’s stall last start on a soft 7 track with an all the way win in the Group 3 D C McKay Stakes (1100m) at Morphettville on May 2.

His only hope is if there is a downpour before start time.

The Inevitable

The Inevitable was back amongst the prizemoney last start with a second in a 1000m Handicap at Flemington on Anzac Day.

The Patrick Payne trained four year old is the winner of eight of his thirteen starts but is facing a tough assignment here.

Order Of Command

Order Of Command is racing in top form for the all-conquering Danny O’Brien stable and is chasing a hat trick after wins in a 1200m Caulfield Handicap and in the Listed Wangoon Handicap (1200m) at Warrnambool on May 6.

Facing much tougher opposition in The Goodwood.

Behemoth

Behemoth has had one run back from a spell for a first up second to Jungle Edge in the Group 3 D C McKay Stakes (1100m) Morphettville but will struggle against this company.

Bold Star

Bold Star is struggling to find his good early Autumn form that saw him finish second in the Group 2 Rubiton Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield.

The Gordon Richards trained sprinter has been unplaced at his next three starts and looks tested on his latest fourth to Jungle Edge in the Group 3 D C McKay Stakes (1100m) at Morphettville.

Lyre

Three year filly Lyre is taking on the older sprinters here and is at good each way odds at Ladbrokes.com.au.

Lyre was the winner of the 2019 Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield during her two year old season and she ran a brave race last start when second in the Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m) at Morphettville on May 2.

Xilong

The Tony and Calvin McEvoy trained three year old filly Xilong has been racing well against her own age but will find this a lot tougher against the older horses.

Xilong finished a game third in the Group 1 Surround Stakes (1400m) at Randwick during the 2020 Sydney Autumn Carnival and was back in the winner’s stall last start with an all the way win in the Group 2 Euclase Stakes (1200m) at Morphettville on May 2.

Free Of Debt

Free Of Debt is one of the outsiders for The Goodwood at Ladbrokes.com.au and is coming off a fading fifth in the Group 2 Euclase Stakes (1200m) at Morphettville on May 2.

Amberdi

Amberdi just missed a place last start at triple figure odds when fourth in the Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m) at Morphettville on May 2 and hard to see her threatening here.

Li’l Kontra

Li’l Kontra is way out of her class here and is listed as one of the outsiders of the field at Ladbrokes.com.au.
