Stieger takes NSW PGA Championship lead

NSW golfer Matt Stieger has a one-stroke lead over Sweden’s Thomas Petersson after Friday’s second round of the NSW PGA Championship.

Stieger posted consecutive rounds of five-under-par 67 and it’s no surprise the 21-year-old looked so comfortable on the Mt Broughton course.

“I’ve had some good results playing here. I won the Champions trophy back in 2009 playing here. It’s one of my favourite courses,” said the 2011 Australian amateur champion.

“I’m putting well and holed out for eagle on the first which helps.

“But if you hit a bad tee shot here you’re straight in the grass and you have to tee it up again, so you have to play smart on every hole.”

Playing only his sixth tournament as a professional, Stieger is one of many decorated amateurs who have recently joined the PGA Tour of Australasia.

“There are a lot of young guys coming through the amateur ranks which is really good for Australian golf,” he said.

Stieger leads by one over Petersson, while New Zealand’s Ryan Fox shares third position with Adam Stephens, Pieter Zwart, Kris Mueck and Anthony Summers.

Overnight leader Jake Higginbottom had a difficult day, shooting a round of one-over to share eighth position with Anthony Brown, Kyle Grant, Deyen Lawson and amateur Callan O’Reily.
