Australian spinner Nathan Lyon bagged his 50th wicket in his 15th Test – just one Test longer than Shane Warne took to reach the milestone.
Lyon, 25, has also become the youngest Australian offspinner to take 50 Test wickets.
The tweaker took 2-15 from 15 overs against South Africa on Sunday’s fourth day of the second Test in Adelaide.
And his teammates have no doubt Lyon’s best is yet to come.
“The first two Tests, he has shown how valuable he is to the side,” paceman Peter Siddle said of Lyon on Sunday.
“And this Test especially, he knows he has had to play a big role.
“The first innings was a massive effort by him, the amount of overs he had to bowl, but he knows there is going to be a lot of work again tomorrow.”
Lyon took 2-91 from 44 overs in South Africa’s first innings and looms as a the game-breaker as the Australians press for a victory on the final day.
Lyon on Monday will again be asked to tie up one end when South Africa resume at 4-77, chasing 430 to win.
“He stuck to his guns and he is going to have to hold up that end for most of the rest of this innings,” Siddle said.
“He is learning and I think this challenge, this Test match, has really given him a lot of confidence to keep going and keep performing well for the team.”
