Australian women’s rugby sevens star Charlotte Caslick has committed to the 2021 Olympics in Tokyo as she continues her recovery from back fractures that cut short her NRLW cameo.

A star of Australia’s 2016 gold medal run, Caslick briefly switched codes to feature for the Sydney Roosters after the sevens world tour was disbanded due to COVID-19.

That stint was shortlived though, Caslick sustaining two small fractures in her lumbar spine to miss the side’s grand final last month.

Caslick on Thursday vowed to be there in Tokyo next July, should the Games go ahead, after COVID-19 forced its postponement this year.

“This team has taken the challenges thrown at us in our stride and I am really proud of the way we have adapted and progressed with everything that happened this year,” Caslick said.

“I am looking forward to continuing the hard work as work towards that Olympic goal.”

The playmaker is a vital cog in coach John Manenti’s machine and follows the commitments of Sharni Williams, Shannon Parry, Ellia Green, Chloe Dalton and Emilee Cherry to chase back-to-back gold medals.

“We saw this year how world-class Charlotte is across the codes and it is a credit to her the way she attacks every opportunity both on and off the field,” Manenti said.

“We are really excited to have Charlotte committing to what will be a big 2021 with the Olympics ahead and making sure that we are peaking at the right time.”
