South Australia’s Gary Putland has claimed a career-best 7-64 but Victoria’s tail wagged as the home side were bowled out for 364 early on day two of their Sheffield Shield clash at the MCG.
Cameron White was out first ball on Saturday for 88 before John Hastings, who had resumed on his overnight score of 14, blasted his way to 80 off 98 balls.
Victoria had resumed on 6-259 and added 87 vital runs in 25 overs for the loss of four wickets.
Left-arm swing bowler Putland picked up three of the four wickets to fall to claim five victims or better for the fifth time in his 15-game first-class career.
The Redbacks made a spectacular start to day two when Putland extracted some life out of the pitch as the ball took the shoulder of White’s bat and lobbed to gully.
Jayde Herrick was bowled by Putland 12 runs later at 8-271, but Victoria’s tail wagged as No.8 Hastings edged Putland through slips for a boundary to reach his half-century and lift the total above 300.
Hastings hit a four and two consecutive sixes off an over from spinner Johan Botha but played a loose shot to Joe Mennie and was caught behind at 9-333 after adding 62 in 58 minutes with Scott Boland.
The powerfully-built Hastings crunched 11 fours and two sixes.
Louis Cameron was caught behind off Putland for four shortly before lunch to close the innings with Boland unbeaten on 14.
South Australia had won the toss in overcast conditions morning and sent the Bushrangers in to bat.
Putland dismissed Chris Rogers (39), Glenn Maxwell (0), David Hussey (29) and Peter Handscomb (69) on Friday’s first day of play.
