Australia’s cricketers still trust technology and they still trust South Africa captain Graeme Smith.
The faith comes despite controversy as technology again over-ruled humanity on Friday in the second Test in Adelaide.
Umpire Richard Kettleborough gave Smith out, caught behind from James Pattinson’s bowling, for 78.
But Smith was not out 111 at stumps after successfully appealing the verdict.
Hot spot technology failed to convict Smith of an edge despite an instinctive chorus of appeals from Pattinson and most of his teammates.
“If I’m speaking honestly, I actually didn’t hear anything,” Australia stalwart Mike Hussey told reporters.
“But most of our boys thought they heard a noise.
“But in my opinion, if Graeme had hit the ball and he was given out by the umpire, I think he would have walked off.
“So that tells me maybe he didn’t hit the ball and the technology backed that up because there was nothing on hot spot or the microphones either.
“Maybe the correct decision was made.”
Maybe it was. But it remains a maybe, though Hussey said players kept the faith in the use of technology.
“Technology we have got, I think we have got faith in it,” he said.
“I think over the last few years it has been pretty good.
“I still think technology can get better but generally it has been pretty accurate the last few years.”
