Pattinson to miss rest of Test summer

Australian fast bowler James Pattinson will miss the rest of the summer with a rib injury.

It’s the second consecutive Australian summer that Pattinson has been forced onto the sidelines by injury.

Pattinson batted for Australia on Sunday’s fourth day of the second Test against South Africa in Adelaide, but won’t bowl again in the match.

“James Pattinson sustained a left lower rib injury, similar to a side strain … which will effectively rule him out of contention for the remaining Tests this summer,” Australian team physiotherapist Alex Kountouris said on Sunday in a statement.

“Whilst side strains are not uncommon in bowlers, James’ injury involves some damage to the end of the rib and will need further investigation at the completion of this Test to determine the best course of management and the timeframe to return to bowling.”

Pattinson suffered the injury while bowling on Saturday.

The 22-year-old last summer was sidelined by stress fractures of a foot.
