NZRL unveil new chief executive

The New Zealand Rugby League (NZRL) has announced experienced businessman Phil Holden as its new chief executive to replace Jim Doyle in February.

NZRL chairman Scott Carter paid tribute to Doyle for his three-year tenure, which he said had progressed the sport considerably and had helped “bring belief and respect back to the national body”.

Carter was confident Holden was equipped to continue the game’s reforms and further develop initiatives to fund grass-roots growth.

Holden has held chief executive roles with a number of companies – currently the Lion Foundation – and has commercial experience in international markets and the hospitality, food and beverage, entertainment, sports and gaming sectors.

Holden also played representative hockey at a domestic level and is a former chairman of the Auckland Diamonds netball franchise.

“The challenges rugby league faces and the family/community-based proposition of the NZRL were compelling reasons for me wanting this role,” Holden said.

“I feel privileged to be given this opportunity and I look forward to working closely with the board to build on the fantastic work delivered to date.”
