NZ wingers in running for try of year

Tries to All Blacks wingers Julian Savea and Hosea Gear are among a shortlist of four nominations for the International Rugby Players’ Association (IRPA) try of the year award.

All four nominated tries are scored by wingers, with Springboks veteran Bryan Habana and Frenchman Julien Malzieu also in contention for the award which can voted for by the public online this month.

Savea has been nominated for one of his two tries against Scotland in Edinburgh this month when he fielded a cross kick from teammate Dan Carter.

Gear’s try came during the 60-0 rout of Ireland in the third Test at Hamilton in June.

The All Blacks were on the receiving end of Habana’s chip-and-chase try in Dunedin during the Rugby Championship, while Malzieu has been acknowledged for his Six Nations solo effort against Italy in Paris.

The shortlist was compiled by four former international outside backs – All Blacks fullback Mils Muliaina, Welsh winger Shane Williams, Springboks centre Jaque Fourie and Japan winger Daisuke Ohata.

It is the fifth year of the award, which was won in 2011 by Wallabies No.8 Radike Samo for his solo effort against the All Blacks in Brisbane.
