NZ to stage junior rugby world champs

Auckland will host all of the matches at the junior rugby world championship in 2014 after New Zealand won the bid to stage the event.

The International Rugby Board awarded the hosting rights to New Zealand for the first time, after it staged the World Cup last year.

New Zealand lost the junior world crown to hosts South Africa this year after winning the under-20 title four times in a row.

The tournament, to be staged in June, will be played in Albany and Pukekohe with Eden Park, which hosted the 2011 World Cup final, touted as a possible venue for the final.

“We proved to the world last year how well we as a nation could deliver a complex global sporting event and I am sure we will again deliver an excellent tournament that does the country proud,” New Zealand Rugby Union chief executive Steve Tew said.

The government will chip in $NZ1.45 million ($A1.15 million), matching the contribution from Auckland Council, for the event which is expected to bring in about $NZ8 million to the economy as 12 of the world’s top junior teams play 30 matches over a three-week period.
