NSW conceded the most wides in interstate one-day cricket history but still managed to restrict Queensland to 8-252 at the Gabba on Wednesday.
With fringe Australian paceman Josh Hazlewood the main culprit, the Blues conceded 26 runs in wide deliveries, including three that raced away to the boundary.
Wides finished as the fifth-highest contributor as Peter Forrest top-scored with a slow-paced 62 on a tricky, greenish wicket which only Chris Lynn appeared comfortable on, albeit after being struck in the groin by Doug Bollinger.
Lynn smashed 39 off 28 balls, highlighted by four sixes in successive overs off allrounder Sean Abbott, before holing out to Blues skipper Steve O’Keefe (3-65).
O’Keefe played a key role in reeling the Bulls in after they were propelled to 0-50 in the 11th over as Hazlewood endured a horror start.
The tall quick struggled with his radar as he conceded 14 wides in his first three overs before being taken off after wicketkeeper Brad Haddin didn’t even get close to two leg-side shockers.
But Hazlewood, who was in the Australian camp for the first Test against South Africa, fought back admirably to dismiss Joe Burns (7) with the second ball of his second spell.
The youngster then conceded just 19 runs from his next seven overs as the Bulls’ middle order struggled against the tight bowling.
Only Lynn’s fireworks and tail-ender Nathan Hauritz belting 17 off the last over from O’Keefe lifted the total past 250 and present NSW with a challenging, yet achievable, target.
Earlier, Usman Khawaja (33 off 47) continued his rich vein of good form before being stumped off O’Keefe to end his 64-run opening stand with Chris Hartley (50 off 79).
