McDowell scrapes in after horror round

It’s not you, it’s me.

Days after declaring his love for Melbourne’s Kingston Heath, Irishman Graeme McDowell refused to say a bad word about the golf course despite a horror second round in the Australian Masters on Friday.

“Absolutely not. It was nothing to do with the golf course today – that was all me,” McDowell admitted.

The 2010 US Open champion, whose image is one of three on posters promoting the tournament, almost missed sticking around for the weekend.

His second round started superbly with an eagle and a birdie, but it was all downhill from there as he posted six bogeys and a double-bogey to shoot a five-over-par 77.

That took him to a four-over total, just enough to scrape through the cut.

While the greens firmed up from Thursday, McDowell said that could not explain his terrible putting.

“I can’t remember putting worse than I putted today,” he said.

“Especially from long range, I couldn’t seem to get it within six feet, never mind dead.

“The greens were starting to keep firm and fast. The harder I tried, the worse I got and it was just one of those humbling days.

“But hopefully, that will slip in for the weekend and get two more days on this great golf course.”

Asked if a late night had been responsible, McDowell said he had been in bed early on Thursday night, but a late night might be the cure.

“I either need to go and batter myself in the gym tonight or batter myself up in the casino,” he said.
