Hamilton back for Mercedes in season-ender

Lewis Hamilton is set to compete at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix after returning a number of negative coronavirus tests.

The seven-time world champion, 35, arrived in Abu Dhabi on Thursday after completing 10 days of quarantine in Bahrain.

Hamilton missed last weekend’s Sakhir Grand Prix with his drive going to George Russell, a stand-in from Williams who will now return to drive for his British team.

A statement from Formula One’s governing body, the FIA read: “The FIA, Formula 1 and Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team can today confirm that Lewis Hamilton has returned a number of negative Covid-19 tests.

“He has completed his 10-day quarantine in Bahrain and was free to leave the country according to the Bahraini health authority regulations.

“Lewis has now arrived in Abu Dhabi following confirmation from the authorities that he could do so and after quarantining has now received a further negative test result.”

Earlier, Russell had dampened speculation about the prospect of an early move to Mercedes after his impressive performance as stand-in for Hamilton.

The 22-year-old Briton fuelled some chatter when he said in Bahrain last Sunday that he hoped he had given Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff a selection headache “not just for 2022, maybe sooner”.

“That was just a throwaway remark in the heat of the moment,” Russell told reporters at Formula One’s season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on Thursday.

“Obviously emotions were high and what have you. I have a contract and am a Williams driver for 2021.”

Valtteri Bottas is out of contract at the end of next season, when Mercedes-managed Russell will be firmly in the frame for a move.
