Four-time Formula One world champion Sebastian Vettel has admitted to falling short with Ferrari ahead of his last race with the Italian giants at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

“It has, in the end, not worked for different reasons. We missed the goals set,” the 33-year-old German told Sport1 on Wednesday.

“Important now, however, is that all parties can look positively towards the future individually,” he said.

“Of course you could have wished for some other things in hindsight. But I don’t regret anything.”

Vettel won 14 grands prix in six years with Ferrari but was effectively replaced as number one in red by youngster Charles Leclerc last season and did not have his contract renewed this year.

Next season, Vettel will drive for the rebranded Aston Martin works team and intends to prove he has not “forgotten how to drive” after a difficult campaign.

“I’ll build on my experience there and on what I can produce behind the wheel,” he said.

“The time at Ferrari also shaped me, I learned a lot, developed myself and I’m now on a different level than before – on and off the track.”
