Australian journeyman professional Adam Crawford continued his impressive start to the US PGA tour Q-school, firing a four-under 68 in the second of six rounds to be tied fifth at 10-under-par.
After being bogey-free in the first round, the 37-year-old Queenslander continued his good form with five birdies on the Nicklaus Tournament course in La Quinta, adding just one bogey on his last hole to be three shots behind Korean leader Meen Whee Kim.
The 20-year-old Kim blitzed the Stadium course with a bogey-free nine-under 63 in round two to take the outright lead at 13-under, one clear of American Vaughn Taylor and two ahead of Richard Lee and overnight leader Steve LeBrun.
The top 25 finishers after six rounds will be awarded tour cards for 2013, a potential dream come true for Crawford who can usually be found earning his crust on the Australasian tour.
The Queenslander is doing his best to keep a lid on things given what is at stake.
US PGA Tour events regularly have purses between $A5 million and $A10 million while this week’s Australian event, the NSW PGA Championship, has a total prize pool of just $100,000.
“I played very solid today and am looking forward to the rest of the week,” Crawford said.
Mat Goggin produced an impressive 66 on day two to move into the tour card zone, sitting at eight-under in a tie for 14th.
And 22-year-old Bryden Macpherson was also impressive for the second day running, carding a 69 to move to seven-under par in a tie for 23rd.
World No.58 Marcus Fraser (70) sits within striking distance at five-under in a tie for 39th and Ash Hall (70), Steven Bowditch (67) and Nick O’Hern (69) are far from out of contention at four-under in a tie for 59th.
James Nitties (71), Rod Pampling (70) and Matt Jones (70) are a shot further back and tied 71st while Luke Hickmott (71) is tied 84th at two-under-par.
Gavin Coles (+2, T142) and Steve Allan (+3, T150) will need something special over the last four rounds to claw their way back into contention.
In the second of five rounds at the LPGA Q-School in Florida the Australian tilt continued to teeter on the edge.
With the top 40 earning cards in 2013, Frances Bondad leads the charge in a tie for 40th at two-over-par, 12 shots behind Thailand’s Moriya Jutanugarn who leads at 10-under-par.
Stephanie Na (+3, T53), Breanna Elliott (+4, T64), Inhong Lim (+7, T92) and Kristie Smith (+11, T108) are currently well outside the mark.
