Former Test paceman Doug Bollinger rolled Queensland’s tailenders just as he did to their top order to dismiss the Bulls for 243 early on day two of their Sheffield Shield match at Manuka Oval.
Resuming at 7-198 the Bulls could only add 45 runs as Bollinger and Moises Henriques did the damage on Wednesday morning.
Ben Cutting’s spirited lower order hitting resulted in 37 valuable runs, but he was caught behind off Bollinger, becoming his third victim of the innings.
Following on from his bright first day, in which he took two wickets with the first three deliveries of the match, Bollinger again bowled with good pace and venom to also remove Cameron Boyce and finish with figures of 4-57.
Gannon (7) was brought undone by Moises Henriques (1-56), fending a short delivery to Steve Smith at second slip.
Tail-enders Cameron Boyce (14) and Luke Feldman (10 not out) put on 21 from 22 balls as the last pair, giving an indication of how true the wicket is playing and perhaps highlighting Queensland’s total as below par.
But the Bulls were spared further embarrassment thanks to a 117-run fifth-wicket partnership between Nathan Reardon and captain Chris Hartley on Tuesday.
Hartley, the early aggressor, made 66 while Reardon compiled a classy 71 before a rush of blood led to him top-edging a sweep shot of debutant leg-spinner Adam Zampa.
Twenty-year-old Zampa bowled with confidence and removed the Bulls’ two top-scorers to finish with figures of 2-30.
Young Blues left-arm quick Josh Lalor finished with 2-28.
Bulls batsman Usman Khawaja failed to push his case for a Test recall, falling for a second-ball duck as one of Bollinger’s day one victims.
