Zimbabwe face massive NZ Test loss

Zimbabwe are facing a massive Test defeat against New Zealand in Napier after going into tea on the third day at 3-12 in their second innings.

Forced to follow on after managing just 51 in their first innings on Saturday, the tourists need a further 432 runs to make the Black Caps bat again.

Chris Martin has claimed all three of Zimbabwe’s second-innings wickets to fall.

Among them was that of opener Hamilton Masakadza, who edged a catch to stand-in skipper Brendon McCullum at first slip for his second duck in a matter of hours.

Zimbabwe, playing their first Test overseas since ending a self-imposed six-year Test exile last year, have struggled with the swinging ball and their first innings lasted less than 29 overs.

Malcolm Waller, with 23, was the only batsman to get to double figures as Zimbabwe posted their lowest Test total and the lowest total by any team against New Zealand.

The Black Caps bowlers shared the first-innings wickets between them, with the pace quartet of Martin, Trent Boult, Doug Bracewell and Tim Southee each getting two.

They were helped by some excellent catching behind the wicket.

New Zealand declared their first innings at 7-495 midway through the day’s opening session.

The declaration came shortly after wicketkeeper-batsman BJ Watling completed his debut Test century.

Watling finished on 102 not out to be one of two Black Caps to reach triple figures.

On Friday, skipper Ross Taylor reached 122 before picking up a calf injury and retiring hurt, leaving McCullum to take over the captaincy.
