Zimbabwe cricketers on strike again

Zimbabwe’s cricketers have gone on strike again and refused to start a domestic Twenty20 tournament after payments promised by the national board weren’t received.

Players on Monday decided to boycott the six-day T20 competition after a meeting at Harare Sports Club, the venue for the tournament.

Zimbabwe Cricket had promised players long-overdue payments by Monday, but when they didn’t receive them, players from all five of the country’s provincial sides held a meeting with their players association at the ground and then decided to go home.

Zimbabwe hasn’t played international cricket since September, when a Test series against Pakistan was undermined by threatened strikes over non-payment.

The struggling board recently cancelled tours by Sri Lanka and Afghanistan because of its financial problems and turned down a Test against South Africa.
