World Cup not on Harris’ radar

Ryan Harris insists he hasn’t thought about World Cup selection as the in-form Australian quick continues to manage his work load ahead of the Ashes series later this year.

With Australia’s World Cup squad to be named during the fourth and final Test against India at the SCG next week, Harris could be a key selection for the host nation given his record or 44 wickets at 18.90 in 21 ODIs with an economy rate of 4.84.

But the question remains how his participation in the showpiece tournament could affect his Ashes campaign.

“I haven’t thought about it to be honest, I just want to get through this (the SCG Test), and get the 3-0 result,” Harris said at training at the SCG on Saturday.

“I haven’t thought that far ahead yet. I will sit down with (Australian physio) Alex (Kountouris) after and the doctor (Peter Brukner) and the coach (Darren Lehmann) after this and work out what I need to do. There might be one Big Bash game I am available for and I don’t know how many Shield games I will play.

“I want to keep playing some cricket with the West Indies (tour) coming up and then on to England.”

The 35-year-old Harris continues to battle injury niggles but remains one of the world’s premier fast bowlers, as evidenced by his return of 111 wickets in 26 Tests at 22.77.

Given the Ashes series, starting on July 8 in Cardiff will be his final Ashes campaign, Harris is desperate to ensure he is there.

Such is Harris’ evergreen status, dumped quick Peter Siddle has turned to his good mate and speedster for inspiration as he seeks to keep his international career alive.

Harris said Siddle, 30, would continue to be a force.

“He still has so much to offer this team and when I see things about him potentially gone it’s just wrong,” Harris said.
