Windies, rain thwart Aussies in 2nd Test

West Indies veteran Shivnarine Chanderpaul and rain were frustrating Australia in the second Test in Trinidad.

At tea on day three, the Windies were 4-188 with Chanderpaul not out on 74, with rain claiming the final hour of the middle session on Tuesday.

The 37-year-old left-hander, who made an unbeaten 103 in the first innings of the first Test, added 88 runs with Narsingh Deonarine (37no) to leave the Windies 123 runs behind with six first innings wickets in hand.

Australia have had a tough day in the field, with fast bowler James Pattinson (1-33) looking particularly rusty as he failed to maintain a consistent line and length in his first Test since the SCG match against India in January.

None of Australia’s frontline bowlers enjoyed success so far in the day, with the sole wicket coming from part-timer Michael Hussey when he trapped Darren Bravo (38) lbw after a 62-run stand with Chanderpaul.

The stoic Guyanese did survive a chance when he was on eight, though, an edge off Nathan Lyon’s bowling hitting Matthew Wade’s knee and evading Michael Clarke at first slip.

The day itself began in farcical fashion as players were called off the field by match referee Jeff Crowe before a ball could be bowled.

A power failure meant the television cameras were down and Crowe informed the umpires to take the players off the field over concerns playing without television footage would violate the West Indies Cricket Board’s commercial obligations.
