Windies 3-97 at tea in 3rd Test

Australia’s bid for victory in the third Test in Dominica has stumbled into the hurdle of veteran West Indies batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul.

At tea on Thursday, the Windies are 3-97, still needing a further 273 runs for an unlikely series-levelling win.

But standing in Australia’s way is veteran Chanderpaul, who has become just the 10th player to post 10,000 career Test runs during his unbeaten 29.

Chanderpaul is alongside youngster Darren Bravo (23no) in a 52-run stand for the fourth wicket which has stalled Australia’s charge to a four-day win.

After losing Adrian Barath for a duck in a seven over spell before lunch, Michael Clarke (2-21) struck twice with his left-arm spin to move Australia within seven wickets of a 2-0 series win.

Barath was dismissed by a screamer of a catch at square-leg by Ed Cowan off the bowling of Ben Hilfenhaus (1-2) while Clarke removed Kraigg Brathwaite and Kieran Powell on the wearing Windsor Park wicket.

That left the Windies reeling at 3-45 before Chanderpaul and Bravo’s resolute stand.

Earlier in the day, Shane Shillingford became the first Windies spinner in 46 years to take 10 wickets in a Test as Australia were dismissed for 259 in their second innings.

Shillingford picked up the scalps of Michael Hussey (32) and Hilfenhaus (six) to finish with 4-100 and complete a fine first Test in front of his home crowd.

Narsingh Deonarine (3-45) and Kemar Roach (3-40) were the other wicket-takers with Roach finishing with 19 wickets at 19.73 in the three Test series.
