White fined over BBL incident

Melbourne Stars Big Bash League player Cameron White has pleaded guilty to showing dissent to an umpire’s decision and received a suspended fine of $1000.

White’s was the first to be heard of a long list of charges stemming from Sunday night’s heated clash with the Melbourne Renegades at the MCG.

Stars skipper Shane Warne and Renegades allrounder Marlon Samuels are also facing a series of charges.

Warne was fronting a Cricket Australia hearing on Monday morning.

It was uncertain when Samuels’ charges would be heard, given he is receiving treatment for a suspected serious eye injury sustained in Sunday night’s game.

Warne has been charged for making “inappropriate and deliberate physical contact” with Samuels, throwing the ball at or near the West Indian in an “inappropriate and/or dangerous manner” and using language that is “obscene, offensive or of a generally insulting nature”.

He is also charged with dissenting an umpire’s decision.

Warne charged up to Samuels soon after he arrived at the crease, tugged at his shirt, swore at him and gestured angrily.

It was seemingly a remonstration for an incident earlier in the match when Samuels grabbed Stars batsman David Hussey’s shirt to prevent him attempting a run.

Samuels has been asked to explain his “unbecoming behaviour” after hurling his bat in response to Warne’s antics.

He is also charged with making “inappropriate and deliberate physical contact”.

The top-placed Renegades said on Monday Samuels’ injury was still being assessed, after he was forced to retire hurt with a suspected broken eye socket when he was struck by a Lasith Malinga bouncer.

It could rule him out for the rest of the BBL.
