Wet wickets hamper Indian practice

When things aren’t going your way, as they haven’t been for India’s cricketers this summer, it can feel like the whole world is conspiring against you.

The tourists hit the road on Monday and headed to Sydney’s west hoping to enjoy an early practice session at ANZ Stadium, venue for Wednesday’s Twenty20 international against Australia.

But while Australia got in a full session at the SCG, India’s practice was limited to some fielding drills and a bit of soccer after the practice pitches at the Sydney Olympic Park venue were deemed too damp and soft for any meaningful action with bat and ball.

Coach Duncan Fletcher at least used the time to get his charges familiar with the surroundings, with hopes high of completing a full session at the venue – or possibly the SCG if the practice wickets still aren’t ready – on Tuesday.

And while it would seem logical for India to be downcast after their 4-0 drubbing in the Test series was completed with a pasting at the Adelaide Oval last week, left-hand batsman Suresh Raina is confident the one-day world champions will be a different challenge in the limited overs formats.

“A lot of the youngsters who’ve come from India, they’ve been playing a lot of cricket, a lot of good first-class cricket and have done really well in the last couple of months,” Raina said.

“Everyone’s raring to go and you’re going to see different cricket from India this time.

“We’re the world champion and we have done really well over the years so hopefully we’ll do well against Australia and Sri Lanka.”
