Watson’s retort to Dhawan mockery

Shane Watson has taken a swipe at India opener Shikhar Dhawan, who mocked the injured Australian all-rounder during Saturday’s one-day series decider in Bangalore.

Dhawan impersonated a hobbled Watson, who struggled to run after tweaking his hamstring while bowling during India’s innings.

“It’s always nice and competitive against the Indians,” Watson said on Monday, when asked if the incident had left a sour taste in his mouth.

“In the end, he (Dhawan) goes about his business the way he wants to. It’s certainly not exactly the way I want to go about mine.

“I think everyone knows in our team exactly the direction that we want to go. We want to certainly play it very hard, also push the line – but not cross it.”

Watson, confident he will be fit for the opening Ashes Test at the Gabba on November 21, battled on to to smash 49 runs from just 22 balls before being caught off the bowling of Ravindra Jadeja.

The India spinner was later fined 10 per cent of his match fee for his over-the-top send-off of Watson, the International Cricket Council (ICC) citing him for “using language or a gesture that is obscene, offensive or insulting during an international match”.

“Jadeja’s reaction after dismissing Shane Watson was clearly in breach of the code as the players are always expected to respect their opponents, no matter what the match situation,” match referee Andy Pycroft said in a statement.

“Jadeja apologised for his action when on-field umpire Nigel Llong spoke to him immediately after the incident and reminded him of his responsibilities.”
